Theresa Stehly (AL)
Theresa Stehly grew up in Mobridge, SD, and later moved to Britton, SD where she graduated from high school. She attended Northern State University, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Music Education. Following graduation, she taught K-12 Music in Eureka, SD before moving to Sioux Falls over 30 years ago to teach music at St. Mary’s School. She also formed the adult choirs at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in 1988 and at St. Therese Catholic Church in 1999.
In 2007, she served as co-chair of Citizens for an Outdoor Pool, a grassroots effort to preserve an outdoor pool at Drake Springs. The group was successful in collecting the needed signatures, and winning voter approval in a landslide. Theresa successfully led Citizens for Snow Gates in 2014, a grassroots effort to require snow gates on City snowplows. This group was successful gathering 8,400 signatures, and winning 76 percent voter approval. Later that year, she was awarded the Spirit of Dakota Award. This award is an annual honor bestowed each fall by the Spirit of Dakota Award Society to an outstanding South Dakota woman who has demonstrated leadership qualities and has been successful and admired in her community and state. In 2016, Theresa was elected to the At-Large seat on the City Council.
Theresa currently teaches private piano and voice lessons; serves as choir director at St. Therese Catholic Church; and vocal instructor at University of Sioux Falls. She spent 10 years teaching gardening classes in the Sioux Falls School District, and her yard has been featured on the Master’s Gardener Tour for three seasons. Theresa is also a certified driver’s education instructor.
She is committed to citizen involvement, open and transparent government and fiscal responsibility.
