Gear Up to Ride! May 15–19 Is Bike to Work Week

Live Well Sioux Falls and Sioux Falls area bicyclists and businesses are gearing up for Bike to Work Week, which runs from May 15 through May 19, 2017.

Falls Area Bicyclists (FAB), a local group that promotes all forms of bicycling for individuals of all ages and skill levels, has led the planning for this year’s Bike to Work Week activities. This weeklong celebration is designed to promote the benefits of bicycling, to rally employees to use their bikes for commuting to work, and to encourage workplaces to support employees who ride to work with incentives or by creating facilities that make it easier to ride to work.

Sioux Falls has received bronze-level recognition as a Bike-Friendly City from the League of American Bicyclists, and several local businesses have earned a Bicycle-Friendly Business designation from that organization, including Spoke-n-Sport, Presenter Media, Blend Interactive, and Electric Pulp.

FAB has joined forces with local bike stores, local businesses, and the League of American Bicyclists to organize prizes, freebies, and discounts for riding to local cafes and coffee shops. There is even a chance for employers to win the coveted Bike to Work trophy.

“While coffee and treats at popular local businesses are great incentives to ride to work,” says FAB member Kerrie Vilhauer, “many bicycle commuters know that the fresh air and exercise are even more valuable. Riding your bike can result in a number of health benefits such as a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.”

Bike to Work Week culminates with Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 19, as well as a celebration at WoodGrain Brewing in downtown Sioux Falls from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be prizes for bicycle commuters, and the Bike to Work trophy for the winning business will be awarded.
