Join Us for a Public Works Street Division Open House This Thursday

Join us for a special open house to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Public Works Street Division campus! The open house will take place on Thursday, October 12, 2017, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Street Division campus located at 1000 East Chambers Street.

“The Public Works Street Division has a long history of serving our community, and we would love for the public to come out and celebrate with us,” says Galynn Huber, Street Operations Manager.

Refreshments will be served during the open house, and a variety of equipment will be on display, including a motor grader, sanders, an excavator, a loader/snowblower, and other assorted equipment.

On October 14, 1986, Mayor Jack White and Streets and Public Property Commissioner Loila Hunking were among those who broke ground on a new 67,000-square-foot Street Division campus. The $1.9 million building was to replace the garage and warehouse at 221 Falls Park Drive. The building was dedicated on October 6, 1987, at what was then Olive Street and Cliff Avenue. Olive Street later was renamed after William Chambers, who served as Street Maintenance and Operations Manager and retired after 36 years of service in December 1987.

Fun facts from 1987:
• The population of Sioux Falls was nearing 100,000 people.
• Sioux Falls approved a total appropriated budget of $83.9 million.
• One of the major street construction projects was the widening of Louise Avenue to five lanes from 41st to 49th Streets.
