Midco® Aquatic Center Celebrates Its First Birthday and More Than 227,000 in First-Year Attendance!
The Midco® Aquatic Center celebrates its first birthday on October 13, 2017. In recognition of this milestone, the facility is hosting a weekend full of activities to commemorate a successful year that has exceeded expectations.
“Once again, the rewards associated with the undertaking have dramatically overshadowed the sacrifices endured along the long and sometimes arduous journey. Thanks, Sioux Falls, for making this a reality,” says Mayor Mike Huether.
The city’s first indoor aquatic center held its grand opening one year ago on October 13, 2016. Since that time, the facility has proven to be a valuable community asset, confirmed through substantial attendance numbers and being named the host site for The Summit League’s 2018 Swimming & Diving Championships.
The Midco Aquatic Center hit a monthly attendance record in June 2017 of 227,005 and followed it up with another record month in July 2017 of 30,995. At the close of business on October 12, marking completion of the first year of operation, the facility reached 227,005 in total attendance. The facility has been open 353 days this past year, with average daily attendance of 643.
“By all accounts the Midco Aquatic Center has exceeded our expectations during our first year, and we would like to celebrate those successes with the Sioux Falls community,” says Don Kearney, Director of Parks and Recreation. “Thank you for your phenomenal support of our first indoor aquatic center for Sioux Falls, a project 60 years in the making.”
In its first year of operation, the facility has generated more than $1.2 million in revenue from daily admissions, swim passes, room and lane rentals, class and lesson registrations, sponsorships, and more. Expenses during the same time frame were $1.5 million, so the facility’s financials are on track with prior budget projections.
