Grand Finale

Special performances will feature the following:

Martha Stai—June 24
After her remarkable debut with the band last summer, we are excited to welcome back local theater star, Martha Stai.
When she’s not teaching her high school students the difference between adjectival and adverbial clauses, Martha Stai loves to create theatre and music. Some of her most memorable roles include The Narrator in Joseph…, Penny Pennywise in Urinetown, Eve/Mama Noah in Children of Eden, and The Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods. She was most recently seen in the Bare Bodkins production of Macbeth and Mary Poppens at the Sioux Empire Community Theatre, in which she perfected her posture and flying ability. You will love Martha’s beautiful voice and sense of musical style.

Dan Goeller—July 15
Composer Dan Goeller created Spirit of the Falls. His compositions’ colorful orchestrations and accessible compositional style have delighted audiences and performers around the world. They have been widely published. Dan has also worked on numerous recordings and several tours with artists including Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Michael W. Smith, and others. Dan’s music, often under his own direction as a conductor, has been performed by numerous orchestras and choruses including the National Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Nashville Symphony, and many others. Dan’s compositions have been programmed on numerous nationally televised concerts and have also been featured in both regional and national radio and television broadcasts.

Dan and his wife Heidi founded Harmony South Dakota in January 2014. Harmony SD is an El Sistema-inspired after-school program providing children ages 6–14 with the opportunity to transform their lives by developing and practicing essential life skills—like discipline, perseverance, and cooperation—they need to be successful wherever life takes them.

JAS Quintet—July 22
It is an honor to perform with the amazing JAS Quintet! JAS incorporates tradition with evolution and features some of the finest jazz musicians in the region: Joel Shotwell—saxophone, Jim Speirs—trumpet, Andrew Reinartz—bass, Daniel Heier—drums, and Jeff Paul—piano. The ensemble recently released a debut album entitled Leap Year Baby. Bassist Andrew Reinartz explains, “It’s an instrumental album from a jazz tradition, but really a wide variety of tunes. We go from straight-ahead minor blues tunes, to funk, to a tune based on a Gregorian chant form.” The work appeals to a wide range of audiences and includes feature solo performances from each band member. During concerts, the JAS Quintet regularly includes jazz staples from the greats like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and others, including many original compositions. The flexibility of these musicians along with two of our own fine musicians of the Sioux Falls Municipal Band will make this a night to remember.
