Dissolved Oxygen Levels on Big Sioux River Watershed in Sioux Falls

The Big Sioux River has a designated use for Warmwater Semipermanent Fish Life. The State of South Dakota has established the following Dissolved Oxygen criteria to protect this water body for this designated use.

  • >5.0 mg/L Dissolved Oxygen

If the Big Sioux River does not maintain a dissolved oxygen level above the water quality criteria then the water body may not be able to sustain aquatic life and fisheries. Adequate dissolved oxygen is necessary for good water quality. As dissolved oxygen levels in water drop below the criteria, aquatic life is put under stress. Very low concentrations or extended periods of low oxygen levels can lead to fish kills.
