2023 numbers with fireworks

By Pete H.

The sound of sleigh bells is a distant echo, and new year's mantras will soon be ringing in our ears. 2023 is quickly ending, and if time only seems to be flying by you, take this present moment to pause.

If you’re anything like me, adopting mindfulness meditation may still be on your to-do list. Reflecting on a year gone by or anticipating the one approaching may stir something inside us not often written in a greeting card. Recently, however, I came across a quote from Ann Voskamp that has helped when I’m not feeling very present. Voskamp says, “No amount of regret changes the past, no amount of anxiety changes the future, any amount of gratitude changes the present.” Gratitude isn’t just for the birds, more specifically your Thanksgiving turkey, and Siouxland has a lot to be grateful for in 2023!

Here are five things we are grateful for:

  1. Saving You Money
We are always happy to offer opportunities for customers to explore our state and community, and Siouxland began offering South Dakota State Parks Passes in 2023. Also, thanks to a new partnership with the Washington Pavilion, you can get discounted tickets for To Kill a Mockingbird on January 14.

  2. Our New Website Design
It’s now easier to stay connected with Siouxland with our newly designed website. Our digital library offers access to finding your next read through our catalog or library apps (check out the list below for 2023’s most popular reads). Applying for a job, learning a language, or adding a skill to your resume is only a click away. And while you’re there, stay up to date with library antics through our newsletters and social media.

  3. One Book Siouxland
This year, One Book Siouxland featured Accidental Rancher with a special performance from author, Eliza Blue. Stay tuned in early January for news of the selected 2024 One Book title and upcoming events.

  4. Summer Reading Turnout
Our Stronger Together summer readers logged nearly 2.4 million minutes of reading and completed over 3,000 summer reading program challenges. Reading isn't just for summer! Check out our ongoing Winter Reading program and start filling in your BINGO card for prizes!

  5. Seeing You at Our Branches
Library staff filled the events calendar with programs connecting you to local and bestselling authors, classical music quintets, trivia, and more. Consider stopping to see new, unique contributions in art on exhibit at Siouxland Libraries, and when you find yourself at your local branch, please greet our friendly library staff.

Siouxland loves readers, and these are the titles our readers loved in 2023!
