Airplane Crash at 4209/4213 South Birchwood Avenue
At approximately 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, December 25, 2018, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a report of an aircraft crash at 4209 South Birchwood Avenue.
The first-arriving crew found heavy smoke, intense heat, and flames coming from the backyard of 4209 and 4213 South Birchwood Avenue. There was flame impingement on the exterior of both structures.
SFFR personnel made a quick fire knockdown on the affected fire area allowing second- and third-arriving crews to make entry into both homes to check for occupants and fire extension.
SFFR had the fire extinguished within ten minutes. Fire crews confirmed all residents affected near the crash site had evacuated their homes. Fire personnel continued to perform overhaul on the 4213 house to check for fire extension. The 4209 house sustained some structural damage with light to moderate burning of the siding, while the 4213 house sustained little structural damage and moderate fire extension on the back side of the home.
SFFR personnel rapidly worked with Law Enforcement to establish an appropriate perimeter and preserve all evidence on scene. The details of the crash are still under investigation.
There were no bystander or firefighter injuries. SFFR worked with SFPD, Highway Patrol, Minnehaha County Sheriff, American Red Cross, SDANG Fire Rescue, Paramedics Plus ambulance, Sioux Falls Public Works, Xcel Energy, and MidAmerican Energy.
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with 29 personnel, seven fire trucks, and three support vehicles. Fire and Police personnel will remain on scene throughout the night to monitor conditions.
