2019 Sustainable Community Nonprofit Grant Program Recipients Announced

The Sustainable Community Nonprofit Grant Program is a Sioux Falls Public Works initiative designed to encourage nonprofit organizations to apply for funding for projects that help to meet the goals within the City’s Sustainability Master Plan. Goals include waste minimization, water resources, energy, transportation, built and natural environment, and community vitality.

The City received seven applications and has elected to fund a portion of three applicants’ requests. Program funding is $10,000. The following nonprofits have been awarded grant dollars:

  • Augustana University will receive funding of $1,750. This amount will provide tuition assistance for middle-school-aged campers from low-income families to attend a science summer camp hosted by Augustana University.
  • Ecomaniacs Summer Program will receive funding of $4,610. This amount will provide funding to allow Ecomaniacs to service Hot Harley Nights and JazzFest in 2019. Ecomaniacs donates dollars to other area not-for-profit organizations to provide litter cleanup and recycling services at summer events. They also provide hands-on recycling education to event attendees.
  • Furniture Mission of SD will receive funding of $3,640. This amount will help provide 26 families with furniture that has been refurbished, repurposed, cleaned, and delivered. Because the Furniture Mission repurposes and restores furniture that has been donated by the community, they help keep more than 400,000 pounds of waste out of the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill each year. This includes bedding, lamps, pots and pans, dishes, and other furniture to community members in need, which, in turn, provides a safe and healthy home environment.

“This program allows us to expand upon our existing sustainability efforts throughout the community by partnering with other organizations with common goals. We’re happy to partner with these excellent organizations to help them continue their missions in Sioux Falls,” says Sustainability Coordinator Jessica Sexe.
