Beautiful Nature Area Added to Family Park Now Open to the Public
Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce the recent opening of an additional 154 acres of beautiful nature land at Family Park. The addition was made possible by the gracious donation of land from the Myrl Unzelman family.
“We are proud and honored to have received this gift. The Unzelmans have been great supporters of this city, and this great gift is just another example of their generosity and the affection they have for their community. The donation will enhance our quality of life for generations,” said Don Kearney, Director of Parks and Recreation.
The 154-acre parcel is a great mix of native grassland, farmland, and creek bed adjacent to Skunk Creek. This property also provides land needed to construct the Cherry Creek bike trail corridor and to provide trail access into Family Park from the adjacent neighborhoods. It can also be used as an informal dog training area with ample groundcover and access to Skunk Creek. Future uses could also include nature trails, scenic overlooks of west Sioux Falls, fishing access, and other recreational uses.
The property became a part of Family Park as the Unzelman family embraces the same ideals that the park was founded on—by providing a safe and relaxing place for families to enjoy nature.
Prior to opening this land for public use, staff have performed selective clearing of brush, removed fencing separating the addition from Family Park, and have created an informal parking lot. It has already proven to be a popular place to train hunting dogs, take a walk, and enjoy nature. Improvements will be forthcoming as budgets allow.
About Myrl Unzelman and Myrl & Roy’s Paving:
Myrl & Roy’s Paving began over five decades ago. Myrl Unzelman and Roy H. Schultz had been working in road construction when they took a chance and started their own paving company. They opened their first shop, which was a shed at Roy’s home on Western Avenue. Today, Myrl & Roy’s Paving is the area’s leading asphalt paving contractor and an established supplier of aggregates and ready mix concrete.
