Disposal Guide for Residents of Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, & Turner Counties

Items to Put in Your Recycling Container:
*Residents, organizations, and businesses should consult their waste hauler to see which of the following items can be placed into their recycling container. Most of the items, unless specified, must be recycled by all residents, businesses, and organizations, but additional items are not required.
- Paper, including Magazines, Newspapers and ads, Paper grocery sacks, Catalogs, Phonebooks, Junk mail and office paper, Shredded paper (contained in a clear plastic bag)
- Cardboard and chipboard, such as cereal boxes (flattened and clean of food grease)
- Plastic bottles, tubs and jugs
- Tin Cans, steel cans, and aluminum cans
- Clean Aluminum Foil and trays
- Empty Aerosol Containers
- Paper Egg Cartons
- Glass Jars and Bottles. Please consult your waste hauler to see if they accept these items.
Items to Take to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility:
*Services at this facility are only available to residents. Businesses and organizations should contact the facility for proper disposal outlets for their electronic and hazardous wastes.

Note: Overhead Clearance of the facility is 10' 6"
Electronics, listed below, are items used for entertainment or communication. The HHW Facility only accepts electronics for recycling. Appliances, which are for cooking, cleaning, and personal health, must go to the landfill for recycling or disposal.

Household Hazardous Waste can include any household chemicals, any chemicals you might find in your garage or shed, and a variety of other substances that are considered “flammable, toxic, corrosive, reactive, or dangerous” if disposed of improperly.
- Paint and similar items, including:
- Latex paint (Latex paint is not considered hazardous but is accepted at the HHW Facility. Dried, solidified, or empty latex paint can be disposed of in the trash.)
- Oil-based paint, Spray paint, Varnish and lacquer, Paint thinner/ turpentine, Paint remover, Wallpaper stripper, Wood stain, Wood preservative
- Household Cleaners/Chemicals, including:

Oven cleaners, Degreasers, Drain cleaners, Kitchen and bathroom cleaners, Carpet cleaners

- Automotive Chemicals, including:
- Motor oil (new or used), Used oil filters, Brake fluid, Antifreeze, Transmission fluid, Windshield washer fluid. (If anything is mixed, please notify attendant.)

- Concrete Mix (unused)

- Fertilizers, Pesticides, Insecticides, Herbicides

- Gasoline, Contaminated or unusable fuels, Propane cylinders, Lighter fluid

- All Batteries, including
- Alkaline
- Lithium and lithium-ion, Lead-acid (car, boat, motorcycle, etc.), Button, Nickel-cadmium (NiCad), Nickel metal-hydride (NiMH), Any other rechargeable battery
- Corrosives (acids and bases) such as bleach
- Cosmetics, nail polish, and nail polish remover
- Cooking Oil, vegetable oil, grease, etc.
- CFLs (coiled, energy-saving bulbs)
- Fluorescent Lamps, bulbs and ballasts (ballasts must be removed from the lighting fixture)
- Ammunition (from .22 up to .50bmg rounds, which includes shotgun shells)
- Unexploded Fireworks or firecrackers
- Home Fire Extinguishers
Items to Take to the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill FOR RECYCLING:
Fees may apply.
*Residents, organizations, and businesses should consult their waste hauler to see who is responsible for transporting the following items to the appropriate area of the landfill for recycling. When arriving at the landfill, speak with attendants at the scale house to determine where your items should be dropped off.

- Hot Water Heaters
- Water Softeners
- Yard Waste, including grass clippings, leaves, and soft garden waste
- Branches and Brush, including mulch, and pine cones
- Wood Palettes
- Real Christmas Trees (Not Artificial)
- Lawn Mowers and weed trimmers (can be discarded with scrap metal if drained of fuel and oil)
- Scrap Metal, including metal cookware and license plates
- Tires (tires and rims need to be separated)
Items that Should Be Discussed with Your Waste Hauler for Disposal Method:
*Residents, organizations, and businesses should consult their waste hauler to see who is responsible for transporting the following waste items to appropriate area of the landfill. When arriving at the landfill, speak with attendants at the scale house to determine where your items should go be dropped off.

- Personal Hygiene Appliances, such as blow dryers, curling irons, electric razors, and electric toothbrushes
- Home Maintenance Appliances, such as vacuums and power tools
- Dehumidifiers, air purifiers, space heaters, and kerosene heaters
- CDs, DVDs, cassettes, and video games
- Construction and demolition debris
- Exercise Equipment, including treadmills and stationary bikes
- Organs and Pianos
- Furniture
- Carpet
- Electric Fans
